Race fans looking for a fix of racing on Friday nights in the
Sacramento have usually had to make the 100 mile trek north to
Chico’s Silver Dollar Speedway for wing and non-wing sprint
car action. But in the middle of the 2000s, the CSRA provided
the early days on Spec Sprint racing on the dirt quarter-mile
at Sacramento Raceway with Micro 600s as the undercard.
Despite large car counts, the fans never came out to one of
the best kept secrets in the region and racing fizzled away at
Sacramento Raceway. But coming this spring will be the return
of racing on Friday nights with Outlaw Karts on board for a
full-schedule.
The Sacramento region borders on the edge of Outlaw Kart and
Micro Sprint territory, with what appears to be a split of
families choosing to race the larger Micros during the
summertime at Delta Speedway in Stockton. The other half of
young racing families in the area choose to race Outlaw Karts
at Cycleland in Chico.
Friday night Outlaw Kart racing was an experiment at
Marysville Raceway in 2007, but rapidly declining car counts
killed the program halfway through the season. With many of
the best Outlaw Kart teams located in the Chico and Redding
areas, it will be interesting to see what kind of car count
Sacramento Raceway can draw with a long Friday night tow.
Another interesting element is the size of the Sacramento
Raceway track. Although always considered a small
quarter-mile, the track is now being billed as a one-fifth
mile. It is unknown if the track is being reshaped or if
calling it a quarter-mile would just sound too large for the
little Outlaws.
A three race Winter Series will commence on March 17 with the
full points summer series beginning on May 18. Pit passes
will be $20 and general admission tickets $10.
We will have more information on this series as it becomes
available.
