Cunningham signs Bowman for ARCA opener Daytona

Team report

(MOORESVILLE, N.C. - January 23, 2012) - Cunningham Motorsports and Alex Bowman will tackle the high banks of Daytona International Speedway together as the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards begins its 60th Anniversary Season on Saturday, February 18.

With sponsorship from eBay Motors and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the first race for the combo will be the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200, an 80-lap race that leads into NASCAR's Budweiser Shootout later that evening.

The 18-year-old from Tucson, Ariz. competed in two ARCA Racing Series races for Venturini Motorsports in 2011, and he certainly got a good feel for the stock cars, winning both of those races in his first two starts. He is the first ARCA driver to accomplish this feat, winning at Madison International Speedway in Oregon, Wis. and Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kan. In addition, Bowman earned the 2011 Sunoco Rookie of the Year award in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, finishing the season with seven top-10 finishes in 12 races. With more than 170 main event wins, 14 track titles, and six national titles in quarter midgets, Bowman has an abundance of experience to go along with Cunningham Motorsports' ARCA expertise.

"I am really excited to join Cunningham Motorsports," said an excited Bowman. "This is a great opportunity for me to work with an organization that has performed so well in the ARCA Racing Series. The chance to work with (crew chief) Paul Andrews is the chance of a lifetime. I am going to make the best of this experience. While I am really looking forward to my first race at the famed Daytona International Speedway, we are still searching for funding to be able to run the whole season."

The team will test at Talladega Superspeedway in the coming weeks to prepare for Daytona.

Practice for the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 begins Thursday, February 16, with Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell following the next day. Final practice and an autograph session will lead to Saturday's Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200, which will be broadcast live on SPEED.
